Some robot vacuums, like the iRobot Roomba j7+ have more sophisticated AI obstacle-avoidance technology that uses cameras, processors and smarts to avoid items such as lamp cords and pet waste. It is a little bit more expensive than the other bots I’ve tried, but it does a fantastic job of avoiding obstacles, and never is stuck or tripped while working on my floor.
While the iRobot j7+ was a good obstacle avoidance robot however, it wasn’t always doing an excellent job of removing dust and crumbs from my carpets. It also had a tendency to over-vacuum certain areas resulting in dust accumulating in the filters, and a less tidy home.
Smart Mapping
Some of the best robots vacuums include an app that lets you alter cleaning modes, create schedules, and look at the area covered by the machine. This is an excellent feature, and one that a few competitors do not have. This makes it easy to create profiles that automatically start your robot at certain time intervals and run it on an ongoing basis, such as cleaning the living room before dinner or on a regular basis.
A good app can also allow you to control your robot via voice commands. Certain models are compatible with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, which allows you to control your robot using voice commands.
To enjoy a hands-free and effortless experience, look for an option with a big dust bin that can hold many cleaning sessions before needing to be empty. You can also find models that are self-emptying that take some of the labor out of emptying the robot after each vacuuming run.
