Replacement Upvc Window Handles
Most replacement upvc window handles come with everything you need but if the original handle was fitted with screws or pins holding it, these will need to be removed. Then, remove the’snap-in’ cover on the handle’s base.
Next you will need to determine the type of window and lock that your new handle is for – this is crucial!
Espag
Espag handles are a system of multipoint locks that are designed to fit on casement windows such as uPVC or wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned it activates a series locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles. They provide extra security compared to the typical single point lock found on older frames.
There are many options to choose from with cranked and inline handles that can be operated with either the right or left hand. There are also ergonomic handles that improve the look and feel of your window, as well as the handle.
You’ll need to determine the spindle size from the base of your uPVC handle if you wish to order the correct replacement. This measurement, known as the step height will help you choose the ideal uPVC window handle for your home.
If you need to remove any screws that secure the handle, use pliers or a screwdriver. After removing the pins or screws that hold the spindle together you can take it apart to disassemble the handle.
After you have removed the handle, you can access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the windows. You can then remove the cockspur block located next to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The replacement uPVC window handles you have purchased will now be able to fit onto the cockspur wedge block and then into the handle spindle, allowing the window to open once again. If you want to make sure that your uPVC handles are securely secured you should replace the cockspur block with an entirely new one.
Cockspur
Cockspur handles can be found on older uPVC or aluminium windows. The handle is turned and then closes onto an aluminum wedge-shaped receiver catch (not to be confused with window latches made of timber that are also covered in this section). They can be locked or nonlockable. They are available in different nose heights that can be adjusted to the frame.
The handle is locked by the small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. These are usually one-way handles, but a deadlock with a locking mechanism is a possibility to add additional security.
The replacement cockspur handles are simple to install. All you require is the correct backset and a brand new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside of the nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are typically 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are many different styles, so it’s crucial to measure before buying the handle.
This type of window handle can be replaced by simply unscrewing the existing handle and taking off the spindle, or in some cases the whole handle assembly. The replacement handle is then screwed in place using a pair pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screws come in either zinc or brass finishes to match the hardware, and there is the option of a locking version that self-locks.
This cockspur handle is simple to install and is perfect for replacing or repairing old uPVC Windows. They have an unidirectional design that makes them suitable for all profiles and Replacement Upvc Window Handles backsets. Each handle comes with three packers, each having different thicknesses. They are installed on the underside of the handle noses and can be combined to achieve backsets as small as 9-13mm or as large 21mm. These handles are available in both left and right-handed versions, and are available in locks and non-lockable versions. They are also available with a variety of nose heights.
Tilt and Turn
Tilt and turn windows are a premium European window design that has been in use for a long time in Europe but is beginning to gain traction in the US. The windows combine the functionality of three different window styles: tilt, in-swing and pivot. This makes them perfect for older homes as they are able to offer more ventilation than traditional window types.
When in the closed position tilt and turn windows lock like a normal fixed window. By turning the handle 90° or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened inward and the window will be tilted in to allow air exchange through the gap at the top of the frame. This is a great solution for ventilation without the need to open a large window, which could pose a safety risk if not properly secured when opening.
If the handle is turned 90@ or 180@ the sash can be fully opened as doors. This allows for full air exchange which is especially useful for rooms that are smoky or where smoke or other odors are likely to accumulate. This allows you to easily clean the glass’s outside, as you can do it from inside your home. This is a job which often requires precarious steps.
Tilt and turn windows are also very secure. When locked in the closed position they are difficult to open from outside, and they have double seals that prevent rainwater from getting into the home when in the tilted in-swing position. This feature is especially useful for older homes where burglars tend to target windows which can be opened by the side hinges.
Spade
There are several types of window sash replacement handles that can be installed to upvc double glazed windows. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There are also tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles, and monkey tail handle. The type of handle you choose will depend on your preferences and the type of windows you have.
You need to know how the handle you have currently is attached to the frame to select the appropriate replacement upvc handle. This is known as handing and is a vital aspect to know, particularly when purchasing online since some handle variations don’t fit all windows. Some cockspur handles, for instance, are angled, while others are straight, and can turn either left or right. You will also need the spindle’s size, which is the distance between the base of handle and the handle’s head.
Identifying whether or not your windows require a limiter is also crucial when selecting the right handle. They are typically used in high-rise flats or commercial buildings, but they’re not required for homes that are mostly domestic. Lastly, you should also take into consideration step height, which is the distance from the top of the screw plate to the nose of the handle.
The word spade originates from Old English spadu, spaedu or spada. It has been translated into many languages, including German spaten and Low German spathen. In the 1920s, during the Harlem Renaissance in New York City spade started to be used as a sexist term for black people. Since then spade has become a symbol of African American pride and heritage.
It is important to get the correct size when replacing a handle that is Cadenza-style. The handles are available in angled and straight versions which differ by a few millimetres. The handle head can change between a D and a T-shaped shape, or even have no handles at all.
